After reading "Girl with a pearl earring" I was pretty sure I wouldn't like any of Chevalier's works the same way. But boy oh boy am I glad I was wrong =D
I think it is one of the most simply beautiful books I've read. First with the gorgeous cover and then with the gothic details interwoven within the narrative. Gahh.. Too much love.
I'm not sure I can ever get tired of reading about the Victorian era, and Chevalier just brings a whole lot of new strands of dubious colours into her story. The fact that she makes various characters narrate their part and lets us see them for what they truly are is in my opinion a great move on her part.
A book I'd love to read all over again, for all its angst and melancholy, it was still a win-win.
